Paul Scraton at the Bookshop

We are pleased to announce that the writer Paul Scraton is coming back to the bookshop on Friday, 23rd May to talk about his latest novel A Dream of White Horses. I have admired Paul’s work since he published In the Pines, and even travelled to Berlin for the launch of this book. In some ways, very appropriate as the story is about journeys, with Ben travelling from London to a small German island to see his friend Pascal, who is in his last days of his life. As he travels, Ben listens to voice notes from Pascal, each relating to a photograph from a different moment in his life. In the same way that In the Pines, is for anyone who has been young, A Dream of White Horses is for travellers in both the physical sense, and for those who journey backwards in time to explore friendships and absence. A tale of friendship, the book also explores what happens when the idols of our younger years grow old and turn to us for help and validation. As well as being a great writer, Paul is a thoughtful speaker and his events are well worth attending for his ability to create an intimate atmosphere and…

Swap stories, share adventures !

How often have you wandered the streets of unknown cities and have, accidentally, wandered into a bookshop? Who doesn’t know the feeling of being on holidays and buying so many books you need an extra suitcase? This October, to celebrate fall and say goodbye to summer we’re hosting a book swap event. The goal is to leave your best (and worse?) books that you’ve read and leave with new ones. All the books in the book exchange are second hand, and part of our second-hand books will be part of the exchange! As well as books (and more books), we will provide you with tea and cozy vibes. So, will you be joining us on October 12th from 10am to 2pm? How many books will you bring? We’re looking forward to seeing you, and hearing about the adventures your books have gone through. Extra: to add a bit of autumn spice, there will also be a surprise shelf… come and find out what that is!

Book Event: Jo Ann Hansen Rasch’s New Collection of Poetry

Jo Ann Hansen Rasch was one of the first – if not the first – writer we had at the bookshop, so it’s a great pleasure to have her back some 12 years later for the launch of her second poetry collection Dancing Light Sings. Born during the dramas of the last two or three years, the poems span a lifetime, revealing not only lighter moments, but darker legacies too. Jo Ann’s poetry is personal and written in simple confident language. Born in New Zealand, but living most of her adult life in Lutry, she has published a memoir, a book of poetry and many essays, short stories and poems. The event is taking place on Saturday, 9th April. We will serve light refreshments from 18.30 and the reading will start at 19.00. Please sign up here if you wish to attend.
